Could continuous feedback overthrow the traditional annual appraisal?

There has been plenty written about the fact that regular feedback is effective in boosting performance and motivation, and while it is acknowledged that employees can fear ‘nasty surprises’ in an annual appraisal, in fact they actively seek feedback on their work – particularly the younger generation, who have grown up in an era where social media has meant ‘feedback’ is instantaneous.

According to PwC, 51 per cent of survey respondents in its 2011 report Millennials at work: Reshaping the workplace report said they welcomed and expected detailed regular feedback and praise for a job well done.
